As the new year is now upon us , this is the time when people make resolutions. However we all know most of these resolutions fall off the track after a couple months. In fact 80% of resolutions fail and by the end of the year many of us are making the exact same resolutions all over again for the next year. In order to avoid this, I create goals I would like to achieve instead of resolutions.
I like lists. I have always liked lists. I’m also a planner so it helps to have lists, especially when I can check off items as they are completed. I use this love of lists to write all my goals down whee I can see them clearly in front of me. These goals or intentions as I sometimes call them, guide my choices and actions.. Setting goals gives us direction for our year so we can create concrete actions steps needed to accomplish them. Goals need to be specifically stated about what we want rather than just generic. Instead of saying, I will exercise more as the resolution, the goal becomes I will exercise 4 times a week.
The act of writing down your goals ensures you are committing to them. The key is to then read them every day remind yourself of what you are working towards and where you want to be. This helps you formulate a plan and also establishes the importance of your goals.
The good thing about goals is that they can be short or long term. I like to give myself a realistic deadline in order to boost my confidence when it accomplished rather than feel like a failure if I haven’t reached the goal by a certain time. You can set monthly goals or longer term goals for 3 or 6 months. Some of the goals I have set will be attained quicker but others will need longer so I will give them the 6 month deadline.
Consider your goals, be realistic about yourself and set a timeline that works best for you. As always remember this is about you and what is best for you. Set some time aside this week, be still, listen to yourself and write down those all important goals you would like to accomplish this year. Read your list, study it and then take the required action. You can do this! However if you feel like you need a little extra support, you know where to find me.
